Morning Joe baffled by latest rambling Trump video: 'He said some really strange things'

MSNBC's Joe Scarborough explained why Donald Trump's handling of the House speaker battle shows the Republican Party was no longer a political party, but was only a cult.

The former president recorded a rambling video over the weekend attacking his critics and apparently misspoke when he said "Republicans eat their young," which was possibly meant to say "eat their own," and the "Morning Joe" host said Trump's obsessions and grievances had come to define the GOP and prevent the party from choosing its own leaders.

"He said some really strange things," Scarborough said. "Again, he battles through so many of the speeches. Maybe somebody should know he's not running against Barack Obama. Last couple weeks, he said repeatedly he is running against Barack Obama, he was ahead of Obama in the polls, that he beat Barack Obama in 2020. Remember when he beat Barack Obama in 2016? It is almost as if he's obsessed with Barack Obama."

"Really, if he were a leader of a party instead of just a leader of a cult, this personality cult," Scarborough added, "he would be more concerned about what's going on in the House of Representatives."

POLL: Should Trump be allowed to run for office?

Scarborough deplored House Republicans for their inability to choose a speaker after ousting Kevin McCarthy earlier this month, saying the U.S. government was headed toward a shutdown during a moment of graver peril in Israel and Ukraine.

"I've got to say, there are a lot of House Republicans that must be naïve and think they can continue playing games, instead of moving towards a speaker and putting a speaker in place," Scarborough said.
