MSNBC's Joe Scarborough warned Republicans are setting dangerous precedents for themselves by allowing President Donald Trump's anti-democratic abuses.
Republican lawmakers have stood aside as the president deploys troops into Democratic-run cities purportedly to crack down on immigration and crime, but some GOP elected officials like Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt are expressing concern about what might happen when the "shoe is on the other foot."
"Not to sound like a broken record, but these Republicans, again, are setting up precedents that they're going to absolutely lose their mind on when, I don't know, let's say the state of California decides in 2029 they're going to send National Guard troops to to make sure that a trans athlete can can be escorted into a swim meet in Dothan, Alabama," the "Morning Joe" host said.
"This is insanity, especially for the party that talks about states' rights, states' rights, states' rights, states' rights, states' rights," Scarborough added, "and I'm glad the governor actually spoke up and said, 'Hey, Republicans, wake up – this is really bad.'"
Republicans may feel like they're gathering permanent power over the political process, Scarborough said, but he said that's not how democracy works.
"This is this is basic," Scarborough said, "and yet Republicans, whether you're talking about lawfare, whether you're talking about National Guard going in different all of these things, they're setting themselves up for a hard fall down the road."
