Congressional Republicans being left in dark over what to expect from tariffs: report

The GOP is "not getting basic information" when it comes to President Donald Trump's tariff plan, the co-founder of Punchbowl News reported Monday.

The remarks Jake Sherman made on MSNBC came as global stock markets continued to plunge in response to Trump's sweeping tariffs. The president has threatened more levies even as billionaires and some of his closest allies have asked him to back off.

Appearing on 'Chris Jansing Reports,' Sherman was asked what the GOP will do if Trump refuses to budge on his economic warfare. "I know you've been reporting on a House Republican conference call yesterday," Jansing said. "If Trump doesn't show any sign of moving (on tariffs) then what?"

"It's a good question, we are really in new territory here. The market is down appreciatively. It's one of the biggest drops in history," Sherman said. "I'll say this, members of Congress are not even getting basic information on what to expect — on what the tariffs are trying to achieve, if they are trying to negotiate, if they're not trying to negotiate. I mean, it depends on who you listen to in the administration, you're going to get different answers,"

He noted the confusion stretches far beyond the halls of Congress and through the White House. "So, I'm not really sure you could walk away from any interview with a member of the White House staff or the president and get a completely different view of what they're trying to accomplish," he said.

"But ... there does come a point where they could leverage their votes and leverage their power on Capitol Hill to try and drive an outcome. I haven't seen any Republican who is willing to do that."
