Trump's aides and lawyers 'will have to decide if Trump is worth going to jail for': MSNBC's Nicolle Wallace
House Oversight Committee chair Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) has requested information from two of President Donald Trump's attorneys, according to an earlier NBC News report.
Sheri Dillon and Stefan Passantino, attorneys responsible for the president’s ethics and financial disclosures will have to decide if they're prepared to go to jail for Trump, according to
Former federal prosecutor Joyce Vance said that it's possible Trump would try to declare attorney-client privilege or executive privilege, but she doesn't anticipate it would work. These lawyers would also come under the eye of state-regulators that license attorneys.
"I have been to this rodeo, and I know how it ends," MSNBC host Nicolle Wallace said. "When you work in a White House under investigation by Congress, you hire a defense attorney, and you comply with every request for the reason Joyce just gave because sometimes you're facing criminal exposure yourself. I think we're entering a new phase where a lot of men and women will have to go home and talk to their families and look at their kids and decide if Donald Trump is worth going to jail for."
Washington Post reporter Phil Rucker agreed, noting that it's a painful reality for anyone going into the White House as a staffer and it's a significant reason they have a hard time hiring talent to work there, particularly lawyers.
"Congressional investigations, that's a whole other thing they have to deal with," Rucker explained. "And there's a possibility here White House officials past and present could be subpoenaed before these committees, could have to come to testify in a public hearing and answer some of these questions under penalty of perjury and they're going to have to spend a lot of their own personal resources to hire lawyers to do so."
