The loss of a candidate for the Wisconsin Supreme Court who had the full backing of billionaire Elon Musk is being greeted gleefully by more than a handful of Republican lawmakers, according to one former U.S. senator.

During an appearance on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," ex-Senator Claire McCaskill (D-MO) claimed Musk is generally loathed by Republicans within the Beltway and, seeing him take a big loss after sinking an estimated $26 million into the campaign of Brad Schimel is cheering some conservatives.

"Here is the dirty little secret," she told the MSNBC host. "There are Republicans in Washington cheering today. They, many of them behind the scenes, were saying we are okay with losing this Wisconsin Supreme Court seat because it's time we take Musk down a peg. He needs to be put in his place."

" Trump needs to realize that he's hurting him and I really think that the Democrats are excited today and feel energized by a lot of things," she added. "[House Speaker] Mike Johnson (R-LA) got whipped yesterday in the floor of the House. [New Jersey Democratic Senator] Cory Booker stood up and did brave things, we won Wisconsin and Florida was closer than it should have been. But the Republicans in Washington are also cheering because Musk doesn't have a lot of fans among Republican elected officials in D.C."
