Journalist Tim Alberta thinks that former President Donald Trump and his campaign will be absolutely vicious toward Republican rival Nikki Haley should they consider she actually poses a threat to his bid to win the Republican Party's presidential nomination.

In an interview with Democratic operative David Axelrod, Alberta explained that Haley, as the daughter of Indian immigrants who rose up through the ranks of a white-dominated South Carolina Republican Party, had to learn how to be a "knife fighter" to survive politically.

Given this, Alberta expressed bewilderment about why Haley so far has not used her talents for political combat to lay out Trump on the campaign trail.

"I think she just made the calculation that she can't, she just can't win the race that way," Alberta said.

Alberta then warned that Haley could not expect the same treatment from Trump were she to come within striking distance of taking the nomination from him.

"If he perceives her at some point as being a real threat, then he'll unload," he said. "You better believe that pictures of her visiting a shrine or a temple in India... you better believe that that stuff's going to come out."

"Trump has some of the nastiest, most no-holds barred people we've seen since Nixon. They're just itching to go after her."
