A hit-and-run driver remains at large after injuring a woman taking part in a No Kings protest in Ohio.
Witnesses say the driver of a white pickup truck deliberately drove into a group of demonstrators shortly after 2 p.m. Saturday in Jackson Township and struck a woman who was seated in the grass, reported The Repository.
"It was definitely on purpose," said demonstrator Lorraine Wilburn. "He went up on the curb. She took a direct hit. It could have been a lot worse. She put her fist in the air and said 'I'm all right,' but I think she might have broken her leg."
Wilburn didn't witness the incident but chased after the pickup and took a photo of the license plate, which she turned over to police, and Ohio state troopers helped locate the driver as he returned to his home in Jackson Township.
He has not been publicly identified or charged, and police said the incident remains under investigation.
"When I actually got eyes on the scene, there was no vehicle and a group of people were attending to a person on the ground," said Frank Maradiaga, a journalist from Rhode Island who attended the event. "People were screaming that a vehicle struck the person and took off. I could see a number of people running after a row of vehicles that were at a nearby red light. People dialed 911 and got the fire department to respond, and soon police were on scene."
The 53-year-old woman was taken to a nearby hospital with an apparent leg injury.
No Kings organizers estimated 7 million people took part in more than 2,600 events nationwide protesting President Donald Trump and his policies, which would make the event the largest civil action in the U.S. since the original Earth Day in 1970.
"I'm seeing a fascist regime," said Robin Huss, a self-described independent from Massillon. "I'm not thrilled for the future of my children and grandchildren. If we don't stand up, who will?"
She and her husband, who said he's a Republican, were taking part in their first-ever protest.
"I'm very disappointed – heartbroken," Jeff Huss said of the Republican Party.
