Oprah Winfrey floated the idea of running for president with Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) as part of a unity ticket against Donald Trump, according to a new book.

The Utah Republican, who announced his retirement last month, revealed to author McKay Coppins that the media mogul had suggested he join her in 2020 in a bid to stop the former president from being re-elected, according to excerpts of Romney: A Reckoning published by Axios.

"Coppins writes that Romney told him Winfrey, a Democrat, made a pitch to run together 'to save the country,' according to a source familiar with the manuscript," Axios repored. "Romney tells Coppins he dismissed the idea, believing that such a campaign would inadvertently help Trump."

A source familiar with Winfrey's thinking said she was never serious about running, but some people close to her believed she should do it.

POLL: Should Trump be allowed to run for office?

Ultimately, Joe Biden prevailed over Trump in the 2020 election, but the former president was eventually indicted in federal court and in Georgia for his efforts to reverse that loss, which the House select committee had recommended after an extensive investigation of the events leading up to the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.
