Oh no, people might have birth control and houses!

Now the squawking about the economic stimulus has moved onto stoking racist fears about ACORN. And yes, I mean racist---speaking as someone who hails from the land of race-obsessed crazy white people, I can speak with assurance that the "community organizer" thing and endless squawking about ACORN during the election was old-fashioned dog whistle racism. Your average wingnut had never even heard of ACORN before we had a black candidate for President. And "ACORN" is being used as a battle cry now because of the racist implications that have been attached to that word. But, as Media Matters reports, ACORN isn't actually mentioned in the bill.

Republicans exploit economic stimulus bill to increase the abortion rate

Next Monday I'll be in Washington D.C. to moderate a panel for the Feminism 2.0 conference called "Roe's Safe: Now What?" As you can imagine, that title, which was deliberately chose to be a little provocative, has been effective at that goal, and there's some concerns that it's a misleading title expressed in comments. I want to clarify that I wrote that title because I believe that the public at large thinks that the issue of reproductive rights is a done thing with Obama in office---he'll appoint some justices who are pro-choice, the balance will stay 5-4 for the foreseeable future, so the issue is done, right?

American Family Association of PA op-ed - 'Obama: An Enemy Of Boy Scouts'

Good grief. You have to read this crafty, but delusional swill from Diane Gramley, of the Pennsylvania American Family Association. She opens her op-ed in The Bulletin bleating about the injustice dealt to one of the historically black Boy Scout troops that marched in the inaugural parade -- by Barack Obama, in her eyes. Break out the tiny violin.

Hilarious discredited 'reorientation therapist' Cohen slams 'Prayers for Bobby'

I really thought this sad sack had gotten the message when he and his therapize-away-the-gay practices provided rich material for Comedy Central and CNN. Do you remember Richard Cohen? A sample of his "therapy" from a report on CNN is looped below; see the hilarious segment here.

Women want less condescending articles about what we want

I sat down to read this article by Daniel Berger in the NY Times Magazine full well expecting that I'd have to write a long debunking under the category "Science For Choads". But it wasn't as bad as I expected it to be, because at least the researchers interviewed admit there might be this thing called social conditioning. The researchers Berger interviews can't quite break out of the paradigm of looking at female sexuality in terms of male sexuality, in that it needs to be explained away or fixed where it differs from what men feel (or what men want female sexuality to be), but they're trying to get there.

Pope Benedict lifts excommunication of Holocaust denier

Can we ever reach the bottom of the sickness and hypocrisy with this man? Here's yet another reason that the influence of Pope Benedict is meaningful -- it extends beyond the spiritual bigotry -- it extends into political bigotry, ignorance and gross insensitivity as well. Readers often ask why anyone should pay attention to the acts of the Catholic Church -- this is why the actions of the Pope (and the criminal acts of his boyz) cannot be ignored or left unchallenged. Via Jim Burroway of Box Turtle Bulletin:
