Out-wingnutting the wingnut

I just finished a book about body issues I want to review, but I'm putting it on ice because this interview at FiveThirty Eight with John Ziegler, a dude who put together a poll and a documentary about how stupid Obama voters are (with the implication being that universal suffrage needs to be repealed if people are going to elect black Democrats) is one of the more fucked up things I've seen online, and that's saying a lot. Summary from Five Thirty Eight:

In case there was any doubt, we did learn that he enjoys setting kittens on fire

Ezra has a post up about the Bush administration's last minute reign of destruction on America, specifically the process of "burrowing", where political appointees are moved to career positions. It doesn't seem out of the norm for this to happen, but what's different in this case is they're burrowing a bunch of people who ideologically oppose the very existence of their own jobs. Firing them because they refuse to do the jobs assigned to them seems to be common sense, but the Obama administration probably best avoid that because it'll come off as a political firing, even though the incompetence firing is indistinguishable from a political firing when your politics require you to be incompetent.

Video break: Star Trek prequel trailer

I'm not big on TOS (I'm a TNG fan), but most Star Trek fans will probably have a lot to say about this new flick, since it goes back into the history of the principal characters.

Homobigotry: More like sexism or racism? Try both.

When I saw this item posted at Slog linking to an article at Slate that seems to be expressing something I've been saying for a long time---that same-sex marriage is in fact a threat to "traditional" marriage---I got excited. Now, at this point, "protecting traditional marriage" has slipped into a status of euphemism for straight up bigotry. The noticeable thing about the phrase is that it was used in homobigot materials in the same way that "pro-life" is used in anti-choice materials, as a shorthand way to avoid saying outright, "We are working to deny people their basic rights." The reason that it's moved from being a genuine argument to a euphemism is pretty simple: Homobigots realize they can't come out and explain what "protecting traditional marriage" means. To the non-crazy, the statement reads as if you're saying that your marriage is somehow less committed and less loving, and when you confront the homobigots with this, they're sort of stuck because the only legitimate answer is to admit that, to the religious right, marriage is less about love and companionship than it is about social order and subjugating women.

Against coercion

Thank god for this Salon interview with Bill Ayers, which is quite possibly the only intelligent thing to come out of the disaster that was the McCain campaign pretending a) that Ayers is currently a terrorist b) that the Weather Underground is any kind of threat to us now c) that the Weather Underground has anything to do with Islamic terrorism d) that Ayers and Obama are best buddies and e) that modern politics should be about endlessly rehashing the 60s. It's a good interview---Walter Shapiro and Bill Ayers are able to talk about their differences of opinion on the effects of radical action in the 60s without getting upset, even though it's obvious this wound is still open and probably won't heal as long as the people who remember that time are still alive and kicking. Ayers is ambivalent about his participation in the Weather Underground---obviously they were doing way too many drugs and hadn't really thought about the ramifications of their behavior. It's farcical to think that you can set out to destroy property without running the extremely high risk that you'll kill someone, and I don't know if he's really grappled with that fact as much as he should. But he's also right that their behavior was peaceful and moderate compared to the government's behavior at the time.
