CNN's Pamela Brown on Tuesday confronted Trump White House adviser and convicted criminal Peter Navarro over the economic impacts of President Donald Trump's tariffs.
During a contentious interview, Brown quoted from studies showing that the tariffs waged during the first Trump administration cost consumers money, while also pointed out that the even large tariffs Trump is contemplating for his second term come at a time when consumers are anxious about inflation.
"Automakers say that they're concerned that this could lead to layoffs and so forth," she said. "Now, several studies did show in the first term that tariffs did help create some job, but even more jobs were lost during the first term. So does the White House have any plans to support businesses impacted by potential retaliatory tariffs? As you know, there are businesses that are worried right now about that."

Instead of responding directly to Brown's question, Navarro simply rejected its entire premise.
"Those studies, you can't believe any of those studies because all of those studies predicted the apocalypse, the inflationary recessionary apocalypse," Navarro said. "I mean, it had the Wall Street Journal and two lead editorials calling, 'The Navarro recession coming,' and it's like all we had under Donald Trump was prosperity, price stability!"
Navarro also quipped that any numbers showing that tariffs in Trump's first term raised prices on consumers were made of "lies, damned lies, and statistics."
