Police in Texas used Tasers and pepper spray on high-school students who reportedly were involved in a walkout to protest the administration's handling of an alleged sexual assault.
"Parents were lining to pick up students after Little Elm Police responded to a disturbance at Little Elm High School late Friday morning, November 19," Dallas' Channel 11 reports. "According to Little Elm ISD, students who were participating in a planned student walkout behaved 'in a way that caused a major disruption.' Social media video showed the activity on campus as police approached students deploying pepper spray. A Taser appeared to be used on at least one student in the video."
One parent, Anna De Luna, told Channel 8, "As soon as I got in, there were students that were being arrested and manhandled on the floor. There were children crying and screaming. It was utter chaos. People were banging on the doors. The police were pushing the children around and it was utter shock, utter shock."
"This school has had a lot of issues with sexual harassment, sexual assaults. My daughter has personally been sexually assaulted at this school," De Luna added.
Maria Vaca said her daughter was "pepper sprayed for something she should stand up for anyway."
"What was the purpose of the walkout? Sexual harassment. They were telling administrators, they were telling counselors, nobody is doing anything about it," Vaca said.
Four juvenile students were arrested for allegedly assaulting Little Elm police officers.School officials said the walkout "was a result of a social media post the day before that contained inaccurate information regarding an incident that happened a month ago," adding that police responded "to calm things down."
A spokesperson for the Little Elm Police Department said authorities "were not aware of any students being tased but video on social media indicates that a Taser may have been deployed," according to Channel 11.
