Don't act surprised -- Trump has always been a sore loser

Though the media took his denial of election reality as a shock, President Donald Trump was never going to accept the results of this year's election unless he was declared the winner. He said so himself years ago.

This is the elephant in the room, the undeniable fact that demolishes his credibility when he says he was actually reelected — and, incidentally, the reason why both he and the people backing his unprecedented post-election temper tantrum will be remembered by history as forever losers. Indeed, long before the 2020 election, Trump's go-to response to even the possibility of losing any election has been to accuse the other side of cheating.

'I don't think it changes anything': Top GOP leader undercuts senators planning to contest election results

Responding to the efforts of what is expected to be at least 13 U.S. senators who are planning to throw up a roadblock to the certification of former Vice President Joe Biden's presidential win, the number two Republican in the Senate called it a waste of time.

Following reports that Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) announced that he and 11 other U.S. want an emergency 10-day audit of the election results that showed Donald Trump lost before transferring power to Biden, Sen. John Thune (R-SD) said they were free to make the attempt but it is doomed to fail.

COVID-denying GOP head infects 4 family members after attending maskless White House party

Tom Mountain, the mask-denying vice chairman of the Massachusetts GOP's governing body who attended a largely maskless Hanukkah party at the White House on December 9, has since infected four of his family members with COVID-19.

Mountain's wife pleaded with him not to attend the party over fears that he'd get infected with the virus. He has since given her the virus as well as his son, his daughter-in-law, and his mother-in-law.

The GOP's Electoral College challenge will collapse like Trump's 60 failed election lawsuits: CNN analyst

On CNN Saturday, analyst Mark Preston walked through how the Republican protest of the Electoral College certification, led by Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) and reportedly including 11 other senators and 140 House members, will work in practice — and emphasized there is no chance it will actually block President-elect Joe Biden from taking office.

"We already know there have been some 60 defeated lawsuits to overturn this election. States have already certified the vote," said anchor Fredricka Whitfield. "How much credence will be put into whatever objections that are brought now, after so many defeats?"

Gone too far? Trump campaign tries to distance itself from Lin Wood after bizarre tweets about Mike Pence

Trump campaign lawyer Lin Wood may have gone off the deep end with his latest threatening tweet aimed at Vice President Mike Pence.

On Friday, Jan. 1, Wood took to Twitter with a barrage of tweets as he slammed Democrats and Republicans of being "main participants in the theft of the election," according to The Daily Beast. Wood also claimed that Pence, U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) should be arrested for alleged treason. He suggested that Pence should face "execution by firing squad."

McConnell facing Republican chaos in the Senate even if he remains majority leader: ex-GOP official

On MSNBC Saturday, Kurt Bardella, a former aide to Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) explained the potential nightmare Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) faces in holding together his party over the next two years — even if he maintains control of the Senate when the Georgia runoffs conclude.

"We've seen a lot of conversations recently about Mitch McConnell trying to assert himself the way he did in 2009, the last time he had an opposition president come into office," said Bardella. "And really, in a lot of ways what's going on in the Republican Party reminds me much more of what former Speaker John Boehner and former Majority Leader Eric Cantor dealt with when the Tea Party came in. They didn't know how to deal with the base, they didn't know how to deal with these independent actors who were doing whatever they wanted, and they ended up losing their seats or walking away from the game altogether."

'Trump without the stupidity': Columnist warns Josh Hawley is the president's heir apparent

In a column for the Daily Beast, longtime political observer Michael Tomasky warned that Sen. Josh Hawley is making a major move to round up Donald Trump's rabid followers as he contemplates the race for the GOP presidential nomination in 2024.

As Tomasky writes, the Stanford and Yale Law School grad shouldn't be underestimated because he's fanatically ambitious and has a deep understanding of what makes Trump's voters tick.

With Hawley aligning himself with Trump's demand the election results be thrown out -- while knowing deep down there is no chance of that happening -- and leading the charge for Trump's desire for $2000 COVID-19 aid checks, the columnist said Hawley is attempting to make a splash during the president's final days.

"This guy is burning, aching, hurting to be president," Tomasky wrote. "In 2016, at age 36, he ran for attorney general of Missouri. He was in that office for a year and a half before he formed an exploratory committee to run for Senate in 2018. His AG stint was short, but he made a name for himself, investigating Google and Facebook, the Catholic Church, opioid manufacturers, and even his own corrupt Republican governor. All worthy targets—but notice that all are quite newsworthy from the perspective of the young comer who fancies himself a Quixote-cum-savior-of-the-right."

What makes Hawley dangerous, he explains, is that he is politically calculating and understands the system in ways Donald Trump never did while at the same time understanding how the president throws red meat to his base.

Noting that Hawley knows that his Jan. 6th Electoral College vote stunt is doomed to fail, Tomasky said it's all a show for the president and his biggest fans.

"Hawley knows what reality is, as do the 140-odd House Republicans who say they're going to vote against certification. But as with all actors throughout history who are motivated by ideology over fact, there is a greater reality, which is that America must be saved from the Godless hordes, and saved by Josh Hawley. No mere facts must be permitted to get in the way of that," he wrote before warning, "Keep an eye on this guy. He's Trump without the stupidity or incompetence or personal obnoxiousness or open racism. He may be the most dangerous Republican in America."

Ted Cruz and 10 other GOP senators join Hawley in attempt to throw out election results: CNN's Tapper

On Saturday, CNN's Jake Tapper reported that 11 other Republican senators and senators-elect are considering joining the ploy by Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) to formally protest the results of the Electoral College and try to overturn the election — despite there being no basis to do so and no evidence of any serious problems in the election.

The current and incoming senators considering this are reportedly Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), Mike Braun (R-IN), Roger Marshall (R-KS), John Kennedy (R-LA), Jim Inhofe and James Lankford (R-OK), Marsha Blackburn and Bill Hagerty (R-TN), Ted Cruz (R-TX), Ron Johnson (R-WI), and Cynthia Lummis (R-WY).

DC has become ground zero for street battles between the far-right and counter-protesters: report

On Saturday, Axios reported that Washington, D.C. is becoming increasingly embroiled in violent conflict as far-right demonstrators clash with locals and counterprotesters.

"Since the election, supporters of President Trump, militia groups, white nationalists and adherents to conspiracy theories have held demonstrations in the capital in support of Trump's baseless claims of election fraud," said the report. "Violent brawls broke out between these groups and counter-protesters during two weekends of pro-Trump demonstrations in the district in November and December."

Republicans will use Trump's bogus election claims to push for more voter suppression in 2021

Long after Donald Trump is extracted from the White House, voter suppression will live on more zealously than ever in states across the nation. Increased stifling of democracy will rank as one of Trump's more noxious legacies, which is saying something.

Trump's 'super-loyalists' are forming a 'secession-from-reality' cult: experts

On Saturday, The Guardian reported that political experts and strategists are concerned that pro-Trump forces will form a "cult" that will long outlast the outgoing president — and define U.S. politics for years to come.

"Maverick super-loyalists to Donald Trump are set to make an audacious spectacle in Washington next week by voting against the formal counting of electoral college votes certifying Joe Biden's victory," reported Edward Helmore. "While the tactic by outliers won't be enough to stop Biden becoming the 46th president, it will serve to disrupt Congress, bolster Trump and establish an acidic tone to political co-operation with the incoming Democratic administration."

Who could follow Trump? Here are the top five GOP contenders for 2024

President Donald Trump's dark cloud may remain over the Republican Party for years to come but there are a number of leaders and lawmakers within the party who may be looking to emerge as conservative frontrunners ahead of the 2024 presidential election. The Hill has offered a detailed breakdown of the top five Republicans who could be at the forefront of the party by 2024.

Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R): Not only is Haley an experienced politician but she was also appointed as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations under the Trump administration. According to the publication, there is an "easy" case to justify Haley possibly running for president in 2024 simply because she is "cut from more conventional ideological cloth than the president, as a mainstream, pro-business Republican."

Donald Trump must be investigated for his misdeeds: Dem senator

Barack Obama's administration made the policy decision to look forward, not back, and to leave the misdeeds of George W. Bush's administration to history's judgment. That would be a mistake for the incoming Biden administration. Donald Trump and his henchmen have made a concerted attack on American democracy, and done so much corrupting damage that it would be dereliction to give them a pass.
