A Wisconsin school district is investigating an incident in which racist abuse was allegedly directed at student athletes during a track meet.

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Waterford Union High School superintendent Luke Francois said the district is looking into "inappropriate comments directed at (Milwaukee) Rufus King students."

Social media users had alleged that student athletes from Rufus King "were targeted with racist comments and said the team left the track and field invite at Waterford High School early. It is unclear if any King athletes did not participate in their events."

"We take all reports of discriminatory or inappropriate behavior with the utmost seriousness," said the statement from the district. "Waterford Union High School is committed to providing an inclusive and respectful environment for all students, staff, and guests. Behavior that targets others based on race or any form of identity has no place in our school or community. If the investigation confirms any misconduct by individuals affiliated with our school or attendees at the event, appropriate steps will be taken in accordance with district policies and code of conduct."

The statement added that "We are committed to transparency and accountability and will follow up with involved parties as our review progresses."

Incidents of racism directed at athletes have long been a problem school administrators have faced, and in recent years the news has put a greater spotlight on them. In many reported cases around the country, high school or college students made monkey noises at Black athletes as they played in competitions.
