‘Serial’ podcast subject Adnan Syed’s case to get new look

A Maryland man’s conviction in connection with a 1999 homicide will get a new look from the state’s Supreme Court, The Washington Post reports.

Adnan Syed in 2000 was convicted of first-degree murder for the killing of Hae Min Lee, an 18-year-old woman he once dated. Syed was 17 at the time of his arrest in 1999.

His case was featured on the “Serial” podcast and the subject of an HBO documentary.

Syed was released in September 2022 after a Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge vacated his conviction, but the Maryland appellate court in March reinstated his conviction on the grounds that the rights of Lee’s brother, Young Lee, had been violated because he lives on the West Coast and wasn’t given enough notice to attend the hearing.

“The State of Maryland supports victims and their families with rights acknowledged by Maryland’s own state constitution and statutory scheme,” David Sanford, an attorney for the Lee family, told The Post.

“We will urge the Maryland Supreme Court to recognize those rights by allowing Young Lee and his family the opportunity to challenge the state’s evidence, to the extent it has any evidence, suggesting Adnan Syed did not murder Young Lee’s sister 23 years ago.”
