A pair of top leaders from the Sinaloa Cartel — including the son of "El Chapo" — have reportedly been taken into custody by authorities in the United States.
Ismael Zambada García, also known as "El Mayo," and Joaquín Guzmán López, son of Joaquin Guzmán Loera, stand accused of being narcotics traffickers in Mexico of cocaine and fentanyl. They have surrendered to law enforcement agents, The New York Times reported Thursday, citing four people familiar with the matter who were not authorized to speak publicly.
Guzmán López and his brothers were reportedly promoted to a leadership role following the 2017 extradition of his father to the United States, the Times said.
Additionally, the federal government has chased Zambada García for years as he faces several federal indictments dating back over two decades.
