UT Gov. Cox's campaign HQ vandalized — and person of interest arrested in 'mental episode'

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox's campaign headquarters was vandalized on Sunday night, and a person of interest experiencing a mental issue was reportedly involuntarily committed and being questioned relating to the incident.

“Rough morning for our team and campaign headquarters,” Cox wrote on a Twitter/X post, captioning images of shattered glass and caution tape over the front door.

According to Cox, this isn't the first time the individual targeted him.

“This person has targeted me and my family before and, fortunately, is now in custody,” he said.

The campaign office was discovered burgled at around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, according to the Salt Lake City Police in a statement to the Salt Lake Tribune.

The outlet learned that a Utah Highway Patrol trooper had involuntarily committed an unidentified person tied to the incident who was believed to be experiencing a mental health crisis.

So far, no charges have been filed, according to the Tribune.

Voted into office back in 2020, the governor is seeking reelection next year and has drawn scorn from GOP hardliners when he publicly predicted that former President Donald Trump wouldn't take back the White House in 2024.

"I don’t think Donald Trump can win the presidency as the Republican nominee," he said this summer.

He also came under fire for receiving President Joe Biden during his first visit to Utah since taking office. The visit was part of a veterans healthcare program.

"I think it's insane that we are having those conversations in this country today," Cox said.

Already, the Tribune confirmed various state and local agencies have been beefing up Cox's security, with lawmakers approving a nearly $500,00 infusion to fortify his home.
