Ted Cruz's ominous 2016 Trump prediction resurfaces as Greenland threats mount

As President Donald Trump continues to make threats of invading and seizing Greenland away from the Kingdom of Denmark by force, a 10-year-old clip of Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) has been making the rounds on social media that appears eerily prophetic, The Independent noted on Thursday.

Cruz votes in near-lockstep with Trump on most issues now; however, in 2016 he was a presidential candidate in his own right, and harshly critical of Trump, warning that he was a pathological liar and could not be trusted with the national security apparatus — a point Cruz made with a remarkably specific hypothetical.

“We’re liable to wake up one morning and Donald, if he were president, would have nuked Denmark," said Cruz. "That’s not the temperament of a leader to keep this country safe.”

Trump has claimed that American ownership of Greenland is necessary to secure our military bases there — even though U.S. agreements with Denmark under the NATO alliance already do this — and has suggested Russia or China will conquer the island if the U.S. does not.

Danish and Greenlandic officials have both adamantly stated the ownership of Greenland is not up for debate.

Even a number of Republican lawmakers have voiced concern over Trump's increasingly aggressive posture on the issue — and the Wall Street Journal has noted that even if Trump were somehow to claim Greenland for the United States, the result would be a massive financial quagmire.
