Former Vice President Kamala Harris has endorsed Rep. Jasmine Crockett in Texas’s closely contested Democratic Senate primary, marking her “most significant endorsement” since leaving office over a year ago, according to the New York Times.
Crockett, a second-term congresswoman, is locked in a tight race against state Rep. James Talarico, who has built a sizeable following online. The contest has drawn national attention as both candidates continue to insist that the traditional ruby-red state is ready to elect a Democrat statewide for the first time since the 1990s.
“Texas has the chance to send a fighter like Jasmine Crockett to the United States Senate,” Harris said in a recorded phone message to Texas voters, the Times reported. “Jasmine has the experience and record to hold Donald Trump and his billionaire cronies accountable.”
The endorsement is a significant boost to Crockett in the final stretch of the competitive primary ahead of Tuesday’s election in the Lone Star State. President Donald Trump has refused to endorse a Republican candidate in the seat held by Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX).
