'The worst conspiracy I have ever heard': CNN panel slams Trump's story on Epstein files

The panel on CNN's "NewsNight with Abby Phillip" erupted on Wednesday night after a GOP strategist tried to defend President Donald Trump's new story about the Jeffrey Epstein files.

GOP strategist Scott Jennings tried to defend Trump's assertion that Democrats created the Epstein files to damage Trump politically. Host Abby Phillip and a couple of other panelists took the opportunity to show Jennings just how wrong that theory is.

Phillip played a clip of Jordan Klepper from The Daily Show breaking down why the timeline of Trump's story makes no sense.

"So let me get this straight," Klepper said. "All of the top Democrats got together and said, 'Let's create some fake files that destroy Donald Trump's political career.' They don't ever use them. They let Trump get elected. Don't use them. Let Trump get elected again. Still don't use them."

"And then once [Trump] is the president, he will supposedly release the files without ever looking at them," Klepper added.

"This is the worst conspiracy I have ever heard," Phillip interjected. "How on earth would the Democrats have been trying to take down Trump with documents that they have never used to take down Trump?"

For more than two weeks, the Trump administration has been trying to find a way to distance itself from the Epstein files saga. Trump's latest attempt involves blaming everything on Democrats, even though that has caused some people in the MAGA base to reconsider their support for the president.

Jennings argued that the Epstein files are similar to when Democrats investigated Trump's ties to Russia during his first administration.

"But where is the Democrat conspiracy on this?" Phillip shot back.
