A massive MAGA backlash slammed President Donald Trump Monday after he posted an image depicting himself as a Jesus Christ-like figure on social media, sparking outrage from his own supporters and demands the "blasphemous" image be immediately erased.
“It’s more than blasphemy. It’s an Antichrist spirit,” wrote former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) in a social media post on X to her more than 1.7 million followers.
“God, we might have made a mistake and [accidentally] elected the Antichrist. Send help,” wrote another, Mandy Arthur, a Christian influencer who frequently discusses Christian theology and politics, in a social media post to their more than 34,000 followers on X.
The image — which was quickly removed from the president's Truth Social account — depicts Trump wearing a white robe and red sash, an outfit Jesus Christ has commonly been depicted wearing in European art for centuries. The AI-generated picture depicts Trump healing what appears to be an ill man using his hands, which are bathed in light.
Trump’s controversial post also comes just hours after he had harshly criticized Pope Leo XIV for being “weak on crime” and “terrible for foreign policy.”
“Why? Seriously, I cannot understand why he'd post this. Is he looking for a response? Does he actually think this?” wrote Riley Gaines, a Turning Point USA contributor, podcast host and conservative political activist, in a social media post on X to her more than 1.6 million followers. “Either way, two things are true: a little humility would serve him well; God shall not be mocked.”
On Trump’s social media platform Truth Social – where the president shared the image in question – the president was also hit by a wave of criticism from his own supporters.
“Mr. President, with all due respect. TAKE THIS DOWN. You are not Jesus. Even if this wasn’t the intention, this is not a good look, I do not support this and I know many others do not either,” wrote Truth Social user “Fight4FreedomUSMC,” whose comment received nearly 3,000 likes.
“Remove it at once. You’ve probably already done too much damage with this meme. Give all honor, glory and praise to Jesus, but certainly NOT this. If it’s a staffer, fire them and offer an apology to Christians for this mockery.”
And conservative journalist Megan Basham, a culture reporter for The Daily Wire, simply voiced confusion.
“I don’t know if the President thought he was being funny or if he is under the influence of some substance or what possible explanation he could have for this OUTRAGEOUS blasphemy,” Basham wrote in a social media post on X to her more than 200,000 followers. “But he needs to take this down immediately and ask for forgiveness from the American people and then from God."It’s more than blasphemy.
