'A very humiliating day': Ex-Republican lawmaker says Trump's lawyers face-planted

Donald Trump's presidential immunity hearing was a downright "face-plant" for his lawyers, one ex-Republican lawmaker said Tuesday.

"This is a very humiliating day," former Rep. David Jolly (R-FL) told MSNBC host Ali Velshi. "Not just for Donald Trump, but for Trump's team."

Jolly was baffled by Trump's "Nixon-on-steroids" defense that saw one of his lawyers declare in the Washington D.C. appeals court that a sitting president can assassinate political rivals.

"Somehow whatever he does, even shooting somebody, must be overlooked," said Jolly in summary. "He continues to surround himself with lawyers who have to face-plant on some legal arguments."

Jolly believes the reason behind the all-or-nothing defense is that Trump's post-2020 election actions, the subject of special counsel Jack Smith's federal election interference case, were motivated by Trump's position as a candidate rather than as a president.

"Trump actually fails his own standard," Jolly argued. "What Donald Trump tried to do was chase votes for Donald Trump, not secure the fair administration of the election."
