While President Donald Trump is boasting about his accomplishments during a tour of Asia, back home his approval numbers are collapsing — and he and his administration are facing a growing revolt from members of his own party.
During a segment on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” the co-hosts singled out growing controversy over beef prices that have consumers worried and U.S. cattlemen furious.
Adding to that is the government shutdown, depriving workers of paychecks, and the looming end of SNAP benefits that will leave millions with no money for food.
Starting off with a discussion of Trump “trolling” Democrats by toying with the idea of running for a third term, co-host Willi Geist called it a “distraction,” before pointing out, “42 million people are going to lose food assistance on Saturday.”
“Well, we have some numbers that [NBC’s] Kristen Welker put up in a story about Donald Trump's approval ratings for the economy and most of them are below 40 percent, lowest numbers he's ever had,” co-host Joe Scarborough interjected. ”He's all over the world, you've got a government shutdown, you've got 1 in 4, 1 in 5 Americans who depend on food assistance not going to get it.”
“You have health care prices absolutely exploding,” he added. “You still have concerns about inflation. You've got a $20 to 40 billion bailout of Argentina. You also, of course, you have tax cuts for the richest people on the planet — for billionaires.”
Sticking with the Argentina controversy, he continued, “But J-Mart [Politico’s Jonathan Martin] sat here yesterday and he said it's things like this that really get people going. Wait a second. You're importing beef from Argentina. And ... then you're doing a $20 to $40 billion bailout of Argentina?”
“That’s a problem,” co-host Mika Brzezinski interrupted.
“While the government is shut down,“ Scarborough responded. “So it's — there's a big sort of mix."
