'Thoughts and prayers': Trump critics pile on after admission he can't get bond money

"I was told Trump was a billionaire and that's why he should be president," was just one of the scathing responses to a filing from Donald Trump's lawyers revealing that he has been unable to come up with the nearly $500 million needed to appeal his financial fraud settlement.

Early on Monday morning, the former president's attorneys told the court that "posting a full undertaking" of the bond "is a practical impossibility," as Trump races the clock to keep New York Attorney General Letitia James from going after his assets.

According to the lawyers, “The amount of the judgment, with interest, exceeds $464 million, and very few bonding companies will consider a bond of anything approaching that magnitude."

Needless to say, critics of the former president reacted with a substantial degree of mirth at the prospect of the self-professed billionaire being unable to come up with his own cash and get anyone to trust him by supplying him with a bond insuring the state of New York will get paid if he loses his appeal.

One X commenter sarcastically offered the embattled and multi-indicted Trump their sympathies, writing, "Awww. Thoughts and prayers…"

Then came a deluge of mockery.

Summing up the news, one critic wrote, "So let me get that straight. A man that is well known for not paying his bills (lol billionaire my ass) isn’t able to find a company that is willing to lend him almost half a billion? Whowuddahavethought!"

"Trump's broke," wrote Art Candee to which Jeff Rudd added, "He simply doesn't have the money - as much as he likes to brag his supposed wealth. Like in his fraud case, he's been exaggerating numbers and here too, it's come back to haunt him."

"Sell Mar-A-Lago since Trump estimated it was worth a billion. He can move to Bedminster," X user Milenka helpfully suggested.

Referencing Trump latest outrage from the weekend, Kellie Mc noted, "Welp, that’s a #bloodbath of no money."

One X commenter posted a screenshot from a Trump legal filing claiming Mar-a-Lago is worth as much as $2.76 billion.

"Dude is on the clock while the interest is racking up," Dr. Amaya Deakins reminded the former president.

Jereen Swan suggested, "So I guess Russia said no this time to Trump for financial backing."

A fan of "The Bad News Bears" contributed, "Chico's Bail Bonds not available?"

"He can't argue that he has that amount of cash on hand in interviews & rallies then turn around & cry poor. Hold him to it, every cent, by the designated date or else forfeit property," Jen Shana pointed out.

"So, NOT a billionaire. Huh," marveled Dances With Bees.
