Trump rages against New York as 'most corrupt state' as $490M judgment looms over him

Donald Trump raged at his longtime home state as "the most corrupt" in the U.S. — hours after his Justice Department dropped corruption charges against New York City's mayor.

The DOJ's Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove, the president's former defense lawyer, directed federal prosecutors to drop the bribery case against Mayor Eric Adams, who changed his tone on Trump since he was indicted in September and directed his top officials not to publicly criticize him just hours before the charges were dismissed without prejudice.

Trump entered office last month with a massive judgment hanging over his head in a fraud case brought by state Attorney General Letitia James. He's personally on the hook for about $490 million, and interest is continuing to accrue as he awaits an appeals court decision sometime early this year.

However, the president avoided a jail term and fine when he was sentenced just ahead of Inauguration Day in another New York City case, in which he was convicted of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in a hush money scandal involving adult film actress Stormy Daniels, and an appeals court in December upheld writer E. Jean Carroll's $5 million civil judgment against him after a jury found him liable for sexual abuse and defamation.

Trump addressed all those legal matters Tuesday morning in a run-on Truth Social post.

"New York is the most corrupt State in the Union," Trump posted. "That is why so many businesses and people are fleeing. We need great Judges and Politicians to help fix New York, and to stop the kind of Lawfare that was launched against me, from falsely valuing Mar-a-Lago at $18 Million Dollars, when it is worth, perhaps, 100 times that amount (The corrupt judge was replaced by another judge, only to be immediately put back on the case when the Democrat political leaders found out that a change of judges was made. It has become a great embarrassment for the New York Judicial System!), to a woman that I had no idea who she was, making a FAKE and ridiculous accusation, to a 'case' that was made up by a corrupt and highly conflicted Judge in order to criminally attack me for political purposes."

"Hopefully, Justice Will Prevail as these cases wind their way through the Appellate System," Trump added. "MAKE NEW YORK GREAT AGAIN!"

Trump was indicted a total of four times between his two presidencies, including in the hush money case that resulted in a jury conviction on all counts — and an unconditional discharge. The other three cases never made it to trial.

Special counsel Jack Smith, appointed by then-Attorney General Merrick Garland during the Biden administration, secured indictments against Trump in the Mar-a-Lago classified documents case, which federal judge Aileen Cannon dismissed in July, and the election interference case in Washington, D.C., which prosecutors dropped after the election.

A Georgia election interference case will likely not move forward after an appeals court disqualified Fulton County district attorney Fani Willis and her office from prosecuting Trump over questions about her relationship with former special prosecutor Nathan Wade, although she has appealed to the state Supreme Court.
