Faced with a government shutdown on their watch and an extremely unpopular Donald Trump, the Republican Party got a wake-up call from former conservative Jennifer Rubin that their future looks bleak.

Appearing on MSNBC on Saturday morning, just days before government operations grind to a halt, Rubin, who writes a column for the Contrarian, suggested Trump’s antics are inflicting damage on the GOP.

Speaking with MSNBC’s Ali Velshi, an upbeat Rubin told the host, “So I think they [Democrats] have to go to the American people and say, ‘Donald Trump wants absolute power and he wants to take away your health care. Go talk to them.’ American people let the White House and your Republican representatives know how you really feel about it.”

“The Republican Party is not popular,” she observed. “The Democratic Party may not be popular, although I think the voters will come home to them next year. But Donald Trump is not a popular president, and he sounds crazier every day.”

“So I think he is taking a rather significant risk. And more importantly, the House Republicans are hoping to hang on to their seats,” she added. “They're going to be toast. They can't say, ‘Well, I am an independent factor. I stood up to Donald Trump. I looked after your health care.’ They're goners.”
