Attorneys for former President Donald Trump are trying out a new stall tactic in the federal January 6 case, reported The Messenger on Wednesday: requesting more time for an issue related to reviewing classified information in special counsel Jack Smith's case.
"In their motion, Trump's attorneys said members of his legal team were permitted to review classified discovery provided by Smith's office for the first time on Tuesday," reported Steve Reilly. "'Our review was brief and preliminary,' the motion states. 'But it is clear that President Trump is entitled to additional materials possessed by the U.S. intelligence community' and other parts of the Executive Branch."
According to the motion, they also need time for two members of the former president's legal team to obtain security clearances to review the information in the first place.
POLL: Should Trump be allowed to run for office?
Trump faces charges of conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy against rights, and two counts of witness tampering in this case, which focuses on his role in trying to get the 2020 presidential election overturned. He is being separately charged with RICO offenses for the same plot in the state of Georgia.
Ironically, the other federal case Smith has brought against Trump concerns his alleged theft and misuse of boxes of highly classified national defense information at his Mar-a-Lago resort in South Florida.
The former president denies all criminal allegations against him, and claims that he is being persecuted for his political beliefs.
