Trump's going to end up in a corner if he takes stand in 2020 election case: ex-senator

In a filing Tuesday, special counsel Jack Smith detailed a considerable amount of evidence that Donald Trump has attempted to sow doubt about previous elections until he won.

The case puts Trump in a precarious position because it creates a pattern of his opposing the results of all elections in which he wasn't named the winner.

Speaking to MSNBC's Nicolle Wallace, former Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) said that it won't be a difficult case for Smith to prove.

"He started talking about fraud in the election in the spring of 2020," recalled McCaskill. "And he kept talking about it. He wanted -- this is a marketing effort. This has nothing to do with facts. This has nothing to do with the law. Those things are as far away as another solar system. This only has to do with his desire to feed information to his supporters that he knows they will swallow whole and undermine the results of the election. I don't think this is going to be hard to prove."

But there is one prediction she had if Trump is called to the stand.

"The cross-examination of him would be tricky. Do you think he'll ever admit his words don't have power?" asked McCaskill. "He can't admit that. He has proudly said he can shoot someone on whatever avenue it was and his supporters would still be there for him. He would never say under oath that he didn't believe he has power over his supporters because that's entirely his self-worth."

Trump's lawyers have been saying for months that Trump is not responsible for the behavior of his supporters. That flies in the face of Trump's belief that what he says matters and that he's important enough to be listened to, according to the former lawmaker.

"I don't think he will ever say that on the stand."
