Former President Donald Trump has corrupted evangelical churches with his politics, one religious voter in Iowa told MSNBC's Priscilla Thompson on Monday.
This comes after a number of evangelical leaders themselves have expressed reservations with Trump, and have even turned on each other over the issue.
"It seems like [Iowa voters are] kind of ignoring what's going on in [Trump's] personal life and how that doesn't align with traditional evangelical beliefs as well as these legal cases against him, which are, of course, different," said anchor Jen Psaki. "But is that sort of a sentiment you're hearing, that none of that matters to him?"
"It is not something that has come up in my conversations with those folks here," she said. "Some folks say, I'm on the fence because of the legal issues and some of the baggage he brings, but that is not outweighing their support. And it's important to note in 2016, it was a completely different story."
They discussed that in 2016, Sen. Ted Crus (R-TX) is the one who won the county.
"He went on to win the state," said Thompson. "And I asked a caucusgoer who says he's going to support Nikki Haley tonight about that ... I want to play what he told me."
"What's changed?" Thompson asked the voter, Douglas Vanaartsen.
"What's changed is that the evangelical Christians have bought in — by the way, I consider myself one — have come to the point where they believe that Donald Trump is speaking their kind of issues, they think they need somebody that can take on the, quote, libs," said Vanaartsen. "So they've sold out."
