Former President Donald Trump is blowing off the advice of his lawyers by testifying in his civil fraud trial next week, and CNN legal analyst Elie Honig on Friday outlined the massive risks that the former president is taking.
Honig started out by asserting that "any competent lawyer on the planet would tell Donald trump, 'You are taking the fifth, you are not taking the stand," and then he proceeded to shred Trump lawyer Alina Habba for her seemingly nonsensical legal ramblings about Trump testifying.
"Alina Habba's explanation makes no sense: 'The reason why I advised him not to take the stand because you have a gag order,'" he said in recapping Habba's recent comments. "That applies equally inside and outside the courtroom, it makes no difference if you take the stand. The reason you tell Donald Trump not to take the stand is you have four pending indictments and anything he says in this case on the stand can absolutely be used against him!"
Honig then pointed out that New York Attorney General Letitia James' attorneys would be questioning Trump on his finances, which could churn up evidence that would be used against him in the Stormy Daniels hush money case brought against him by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.
"He's absolutely taking a risk by taking the stand," Honig concluded.
