'Temperamental' Trump could still 'pull rug out from under' Cabinet pick: ex-GOP lawmaker

According to a former Republican congressman, Donald Trump's hatred of looking like a loser could lead him to replace embattled Fox News personality Pete Hegseth if it looks like he can't round up the Republican Senate votes he needs to be confirmed.

Speaking with MSNBC host Chris Jansing, ex-Rep. Dave Jolly (R-FL) said that, while the president-elect is unpredictable, one thing people can count on is his obsession with winning — and that does not bode well for Hegseth, who is encumbered with allegations of sexual assault and drinking issues.

"Is he [Hegseth] qualified to be secretary of the Department of Defense?" asked Jolly. "I think most senators know the answer to that is no. But Donald Trump has two strong characteristics we have seen before: he doesn't like losers, but he also doesn't like losing."

"I think what we saw at the end of last week is an effort when they floated the three alternative names, they were prepared to cut Hegseth, because [Trump] doesn't like to be associated with someone who can't get the votes in the Senate," he continued. "Now that this is dragging on, is Donald Trump going to dig in his heels because he doesn't like losing and will he say to [Iowa Republican] Joni Ernst and [Republican Senator Susan] Collins and others, 'You will confirm Pete Hegseth?"

"This is having reverberations of the [Supreme Court Justice Brett] Kavanaugh hearings," he observed. "Where we are looking at the senators to act out a conscience and say Hegseth might be a bridge too far, but we got to the actual vote and they all fell in line."

"We could see Donald Trump pull the rug out from under Hegseth as a temperamental president-elect," he added with a smile.
