A Maryland police officer who was in Washington, D.C., on January 6 will return to work after an internal investigation cleared him.
The Anne Arundel County Police Department suspended the accused officer with pay on Jan. 11 while his role in riot was investigated, and the agency's office of professional standards found he had not broken any laws or department policies, reported Patch.
"The Anne Arundel County Police Department is committed to the highest level of ethical standards by its sworn and civilian members, whether on or off duty," the agency said in the release without identifying the officer. "The Anne Arundel County Police Department also supports all lawful expressions of freedom of speech and assembly."
O'Brien Atkinson, the president of Anne Arundel County's Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 70, told The Baltimore Sun that the officer had only attended a Donald Trump rally with his family.
The former president held a "Stop the Steal" rally on January 6, where he tossed out baseless election fraud conspiracy theories to supporters -- many of whom then stormed the U.S. Capitol as lawmakers certified Joe Biden's election win.
The insurrection resulted in five deaths, including one police officer who suffered strokes related to the assault. More than 130 other officers were injured.
Federal prosecutors have filed charges against more than 400 people in connection with the violent insurrection.
