Washington Post reporter Carol Leonnig revealed on MSNBC that, when meeting with Donald Trump, he confessed that he was on board with the Jan. 6 protesters attacking the U.S. Capitol.

"I remember my co-author and I, when we wrote a book about the last year of Donald Trump's presidency, we went to visit him and interview him on the record," she recalled.

"He was no longer president, but he was in Mar-a-Lago. And we asked him, what did you want to happen? And that day — that day — he said, I wanted what the protesters wanted. I wanted what they wanted, which was essentially to break into the Capitol and stop the certification of the vote. That intent is critical."

The conversation was about the recent revelations that special counsel Jack Smith obtained Donald Trump's cell phone to search for evidence related to the 2020 election overthrow attempt.

"So the first thing that you use this for is the same way you used to use telephone records," NYU law professor and former FBI general counsel Andrew Weissman said, referring to using phone logs to help create a timeline.

"And you can be sure that both on January 6th and the days leading up to it and the days after, the prosecution is going to want to present to a jury very precise details about exactly what happened," Weissmann continued.

"And then on the speculative part, which Carol started alluding to, it could be that we learn who he spoke to. We could see images on that phone, for instance, of his seeing what was happening in the Capitol.

He explained that there is a reference in Jack Smith's filing to Judge Tanya Chutkan that reveals investigators were able to capture websites and images from the phone. He explained that there could also have been things deleted, and recovered.

Loennig noted that it's just as critical to see the tweets he sent, compared to those he drafted that he may have been talked out of sending.
