The former Portland mayor who filed Maine’s 14th Amendment challenge to Donald Trump’s ballot eligibility said Tuesday his success has conservatives running scared.
“They're just very scared of the fact they know the law is not on their side so they're going to try to make this partisan,” Ethan Strimling said.
“This has more to do with their wanting to protect Donald Trump as their front-runner than it does anything about choice.”
Strimling appeared on MSNBC to discuss Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows' ruling barring Trump from the state’s presidential ballot under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment insurrectionist ban.
“Anybody who steps back and looks at this knows Donald Trump is an insurrectionist,” Strimling said. “The chances are very likely that he should not be allowed to run.”

Strimling also responded to the subsequent uproar which saw Maine conservatives threatening to impeach Bellows and her home swatted.
Strimling was quick to throw his support behind Bellows and to cast disdain on critics who fear her ruling will turn Trump into a martyr.
“Anytime Trump loses, he still declares himself the winner, so let's stop trying to pretend there's some way to placate Trump to make him go away just through being nice,” Strimling said. “That's clearly not going to happen.”
