New York Times reporter Lulu Garcia-Navarro weighed in Tuesday on the escalating fallout between Elon Musk and President Donald Trump after the tech billionaire unleashed his harshest criticism yet of Trump’s signature “One, Big, Beautiful Bill.”
"I'm sorry, but I just can't stand it anymore," Musk wrote Tuesday on his X platform. "This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination."
The outburst came just days after Musk departed from his role as DOGE head, and appears to signal a break with the president, according to Garcia-Navarro.
“Let's be frank, the reason that he has so much power is because he's the richest man in the world and wants to fund campaigns,” Garcia-Navarro said in a CNN interview on Tuesday. “But this is a bromance that has long been predicted to go wrong, because why? There can be only one.”

According to the Times journalist, the Musk-Trump alliance was always transactional.
“It was a marriage of convenience. And that convenience seems to have frayed,” she said.
Garcia-Navarro added that while Musk “has the money,” the real power lies with Trump.
“Yes, Elon has the money,” she said. “Yes, he could use it, but the limits of that have been seen already.”
