During an appearance on MSNBC on Wednesday morning, Marc Caputo of Axios described the growing tension at the White House before Elon Musk finally left the administration and how aides to Donald Trump got in their parting shot.

He then added that the billionaire retaliated in kind.

Speaking with the hosts of MSNBC about his reporting on Tuesday on why Musk fell out of favor with Trump insiders, Caputo pointed to the decision to yank the nomination of Musk's close ally Jared Isaacman to be NASA administrator, ostensibly because he had previously donated to Democrats.

According to Caputo, members of Trump's inner circle "conspired" against Musk.

Now that Musk has been taking shots at the White House and the GOP leadership, Caputo explained, "Jared Isaacman, was summarily and unexpectedly canceled as Donald Trump's pick on Saturday night and there was a lot of suspicion that various White House staffers conspired to have this done as, according to one person who I spoke to, an F-you to Elon Musk."

In his reporting for Axios he was more specific, writing: "After Isaacman's nomination was dropped, word quickly spread in the White House that Sergio Gor — the director of the Office of Presidential Personnel who had clashed with Musk — was behind the decision," Caputo quoting an official admitting, "This was Sergio's out-the-door 'f--- you' to Musk," one White House official said.

On MSNBC he added, "And after that it seems, I'm told, and we see Elon Musk got very sour on the bill. He waited until White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt was at the podium for maximum damage, and then he released his post and just sort of wrecked the White House's afternoon."
