Former White House Press Secretary and current MSNBC host Jen Psaki on Wednesday likened a Donald Trump social media post in which the former president without evidence claimed he’s the victim of political persecution to Vladimir Putin’s assertion in the leadup to Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.
Trump on Wednesday in an all-caps rant on his Truth Social website wrote that “THE DEMOCRAT PROSECUTORS WAITED YEARS TO BRING CHARGES SO THAT THEY COULD INTERFERE WITH THE 2024 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION. THEY ARE GETTING, HOWEVER, BIG BLOWBACK!!!”
Psaki during an appearance on MSNBC’s “Alex Wagner Tonight” was responding to a question from the host over what an appropriate Democratic response to this line of attack would be.
Wagner had just read Trump’s post on the air and disputed the former president’s assertion that prosecutors had waited for years to bring the case against him.
“For the record, special counsel Jack Smith has been working on this case for a little over eight months,” she said.
Said Psaki: “Can I just say first when you were reading that what it reminded me of is what Vladimir Putin did at the beginning before the war in Ukraine started, which was to project and say the Ukrainians are attacking us as if, if you say it, it's true.”
As for the Democratic response, Psaki said that “there's a little bit of a split view on this, which is apparent in public, right. You look at the party committees, the DNC is not talking about the specifics of the investigations. The DCCC is, the White House is not."
“I think this will change once the election gets closer. Now just remember how Joe Biden ran for president in 2020, the heart of the nation, the soul of the nation.”
