Former Republican insider David Frum this week argued that there are striking similarities between President-elect Donald Trump and former President Richard Nixon.

However, Frum also believes that Trump is in a better position to succeed than Nixon ever was.

While speaking with PBS News this week, Frum said that one difference between Nixon's attempt to weaponize the Department of Justice and the Internal Revenue Service against his opponents is that Trump has far more support within his party for doing this than Nixon ever did.

"So when I say it's bigger than Watergate, what Trump wants to do is to take control of, especially the FBI, but also other security agencies and use them as arms of his personal power," he said. "Nixon failed. Trump is on the way to succeeding. Nixon did it secretly, Trump is doing it publicly. Nixon was opposed by his own party, Trump is supported by his own party."

Frum then said that America is in "the same predicament" that it was in with Nixon back in the early 1970s, but is "bigger and more dangerous and more likely to succeed."
