Rachel Maddow ripped into the latest cost-cutting effort President Donald Trump and his Department of Government Efficiency ally Elon Musk have taken on: the unloading of government properties.

“They tried to sell the CIA,” the MSNBC host declared Wednesday during her show’s opening monologue. “The president had his top campaign donor try to sell the CIA.

Maddow, who appeared stunned by the development, opened her show by detailing the massive costs the Trump administration spent on sending immigrants to Guantanamo Bay on military flights that she contrasted to their DOGE-led cost-cutting pledge, which includes sweeping firings throughout the federal government.

“There is friction and resistance inside the government and in the U.S. military when people are being asked to do things that are expensive and pointless and wasteful and embarrassing and ultimately indefensible,” Maddow told viewers. But, she added, “there is journalism and therefore public attention to the indefensible costs and consequences of some of their most hurtful and ill-advised decisions."

Maddow called out the administration’s move to list 443 government properties, as reported by Bloomberg, which was scrapped.

“They tried that yesterday and then oops, oh, push back. Who could have expected? And so then today, less than 24 hours later, they took it all back. They took them all down,” Maddow said.

She then laid into to Trump and Musk in a passionate analysis that the longtime host of the top-rated primetime show has become known for.

“Everywhere they go, everything they have tried to do, they are running up against opposition and annoyance,” Maddow said. “They are running up against their own stupidity. They are running up against their own ignorance. They are running up against the law.”

She added: “The pushback all over this country has thrown down stop strips in the road to flatten their tires and at least slow them down, and sometimes to stop them."
