The internet broke into hysterics on Sunday when Rep. Derrick Van Orden (R-WI) told a crowd of Iowa supporters of Donald Trump that the Republican front-runner would give anything to people out of his overwhelming generosity.

Speaking in Indianola, Van Orden explained to the audience, "They don’t understand that Trump will stand for you in a time of need. He will literally give you the shirt off his back, and he loves his country and his family more than you’ll ever know."

It prompted ridicule and questions for Van Orden about examples of Trump ever putting someone above himself.

"Cue that clip of Trump not holding the umbrella for Melania in the downpour," said Brian Guest, referencing moments when Trump let the former first lady walk off so he could speak to the media or ensure he was more covered.

All Mehdi Hasan could do is laugh hysterically.

MSNBC political commentator Brian Tyler Cohen posted a screen capture of Trump's recent interview with Lou Dobbs. He said he hopes the economy crashes so he can blame President Joe Biden and have something to use for his 2024 campaign.

"He literally scammed charities," said Ben Wexler.

Influencer JoJoFromJerz recalled, "While on a 'condolence' call with the grieving pregnant widow of U.S. Army Sgt. La David Johnson, Donald Trump said: 'Well, I guess you know he knew what he was signing up for…'"

Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) posted a gif of Trump throwing paper towels to people who lost their homes in Puerto Rico from the massive hurricane that devastated the island.

Sally Canfield adopted the "different planet" approach to the comments: "And over here on Earth 1, Trump does and will do none of this."

"Donald Trump has never stood for anyone else in their time of need. He will stab you in the back & take your wallet while you’re fawning over his nonexistent 'selflessness' & 'generosity.' He hates his country & his family & has no capacity to love anything or anyone but himself," posted Andrew Wortman of "America Rises" said of Trump.

"How the holy hell did these people create a fantasy world so profoundly at odds with the reality of a con man who spent his entire career stiffing working men and women?" asked Michael Freeman.

Peter Artkin recalled: "Actually, there are quite a number of cities that Trump has stiffed for security Bills. Seems a lot like a dine and dash ahole (sic) to many."

He's correct; there are millions in unpaid security bills, as of a 2020 count, and that has only increased over the years. Some cities have to "write off" as a loss. For smaller cities that couldn't do that, they've had to fight to get some of the funds from the Trump campaign. Memphis was scared to provide Trump with any security at all because they were worried they'd get stiffed on the bill, too. One city sent the Trump campaign to collections.

He also has unpaid media costs.
