Donald Trump suggested he would serve as speaker of the House of Representatives as he campaigns for president and faces numerous legal challenges.
The twice-impeached former president, who has been charged with 91 criminal counts in four jurisdictions, is being floated as a potential successor to deposed House speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), in violation of Republican rules against anyone facing more than two years in prison serving in that role.
"I am running for President, have a 62 Point lead over Republicans, and am up on Crooked Joe Biden, despite the Democrat Party’s massive Law-fare, Weaponization, and Election Interference efforts, by 4 to 11 Points, but will do whatever is necessary to help with the Speaker of the House selection process, short term, until the final selection of a GREAT REPUBLICAN SPEAKER is made," Trump posted Thursday at 5:38 a.m. "A Speaker who will help a new, but highly experienced President, ME, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"
POLL: Should Trump be allowed to run for office?
McCarthy was ousted Tuesday after Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) filed a motion to vacate his office, and eight Republicans joined with all Democrats in favor of pushing him out.
Majority whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) and Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) have each announced they would seek to replace McCarthy.
