Former President Donald Trump is so vainglorious about his looks that everything else, including the Constitution plays second fiddle, according to his former aide.
Sarah Matthews, who served former the Trump administration as deputy press secretary, laughed with MSNBC host Nicolle Wallace over the former president's singular vanities.
"He is vain and cares about his appearances," Matthews said. But, she added, "He has no shame when it comes to...not caring about the Constitution."
Wallace, a former conservative White House communications director herself, noted Trump was "disturbed" by Stormy Daniels talking about his body parts in her book and dislikes going out in the rain because of his hair.
"He cares about his body," Wallace said. "Which is amazing because I hear he really does eats bacon cheese burgers everyday."
Matthews concurred.
"But he had the White House doctor lie about his health and his weight," she said.
Wallace argued Trump's issues with weight were probably a connection he shares with a lot of Americans.
"I think it's the most relatable thing about him," Wallace said. "But to both be that vain and lie about it seems like both side of the coin."
"How you do go after him," she said, echoing Wallace's initial question. "I think that President Biden has done a great job of talking about the case for democracy."
She added: "Obviously, we saw that as a motivating factor for people in 2022 and I think that Donald Trump and his people actually, his team, feel worried about that and so that is why you are trying to see him flip this narrative; that's something Trump always does — he'll take something that is being lobbed at him and somehow flip it on its head— and he has been saying 'Joe Biden is the threat to democracy!' and I know that sadly a lot of Republicans believe that because they disagree with the policies of the Biden administration."
For Matthews, there is something that is unimpeachable: his commitment to the country's founding document.
"I can disagree with the policies of Joe Biden," she said. "But I can acknowledge that he is someone that will uphold our Constitution. I cannot say the same for Donald Trump."
