While more than a few critics of Donald Trump were appalled that he decided to talk about "trophy wives" at Saturday's West Point graduation, another faction couldn't get over his decision to wear a "Make America Great Again" (MAGA) hat for the occasion.

With CNN reporting that the commencement speech was half-traditional exhortations to go forward and half-MAGA rally ranting, the bright red hat fashion choice was on the receiving end of a wave of disgust and derision.

Journalist David Bernstein took to Bluesky to observe, "Our President is currently delivering the commencement address at West Point while wearing a MAGA hat and talking about his great campaign victory and various fantastic accomplishments wtaf."

"The only difference between a MAGA hat and KKK hood is that the KKK were ashamed to show their faces," economist Patrick Chovanec suggested.

Popular podcaster and veteran Fred Wellman wrote on Bluesky, "This is deeply disgusting. Wearing his pathetic campaign hat to the West Point graduation."

On X, minor league baseball franchise owner Lou DiBella suggested the commander-in-chief should have been wearing an "Army" hat, writing: "Ladies and Gentlemen, the President of the United States! A lesson on trophy wives; how inspiring for our future Army officers at their commencement. Nice MAGA hat ... how appropriate! Consider this one instead on next graduation day."

"Trump wearing a MAGA hat while talking to graduates at West Point is pretty terrible and hardly anyone will make a fuss of it," predicted BYU political scientist Darin Self.

Elon Musk's own Grok on X has called upon to verify if the photo of the president in the hat was photoshopped and responded, "The photo of Donald Trump wearing a MAGA hat at the West Point commencement on May 24, 2025, appears authentic based on available evidence. Multiple news outlets, including The Mirror US, CBS News, and The New York Times, confirm he wore the hat during the event. No credible claims suggest the image was photoshopped, despite speculation due to the unusual context of a political hat at a military ceremony. The controversy stems from the perceived inappropriateness, not the photo's veracity."

Veteran Daniel Larsen chipped in, "Orange blob menace psychopath convicted felon maga cult leader rambled and dissembled. Wearing that hat to a West Point commencement is high crimes and misdemeanors. Impeach this idiot."
