President Donald Trump's coalition is in chaos after a rival faction split off to support another former TV star who thinks he can make America great again, according to a new report.
The onetime Fox News star Tucker Carlson hosted former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), and former counterterrorism official Joe Kent in his Maine cabin to discuss plans for a third party, Wired reported Wednesday.
“We said no more foreign wars and we meant it and supported Donald Trump because he made that promise,” Greene posted on X, Saturday. “But he’s betrayed us all. Our commitment is America First for all Americans, right, left, and center. The movement has begun.”
Carlson promised to reveal more about the group's plans on his show the following evening.
“MAGA was betrayed," Carlson said. "We all were. It's time for a new path forward.”
Kent told "The Young Turks" show on Tuesday that the group has been trying persuade Carlson to launch a bid for president in 2028, but he said the right-wing broadcaster doesn't seem willing to do so at this point.
The president's base has splintered over his handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files and his decision to enter a foreign war in Iran – two of the MAGA movement's animating principles – and the outcast faction pushing Carlson to run will likely send shockwaves through the Republican Party heading into the midterm elections.
"He’s a lunatic!" said right-wing influencer and Trump confidante Laura Loomer, responding to Kent's interview on the Young Turks. "Tucker wants to hijack the GOP in 2026 and 2028."
The 80-year-old Trump is constitutionally prohibited from seeking a third term and has designated Vice President JD Vance as his heir apparent, but others in the America First movement are seemingly jockeying for position.
“They are going to try to create this America First movement without me," said influential white nationalist Nick Fuentes, "but it has to exclude me because it will also be without any kind of strong message on religion, race or maybe even immigration. These people will also all support JD Vance in 2028.”
