Congressman James Comer (R-KY) denied a central part of his investigation into President Joe Biden’s son on CNN Wednesday — but was played a previous TV recording of his own words that shot down his claims.
The head of the House’s oversight committee tried to claim a since-discredited witness in the probe into Hunter Biden’s dealings with a Ukrainian company had never been considered important.
“I never said he was a crucial part of the investigation,” he said on Wednesday, referring to Alexander Smirnov, an FBI informant who pleaded guilty this week to lying about a fake bribery scheme involving the president and his son.
But CNN host Pamela Brown pushed back, saying Comer had said Smirnov’s evidence was essential to the investigation — and she had the tapes to prove it.
“We just played it on Fox!” she said.

Seconds earlier, the network ran an earlier interview with Comer in which he told Fox News about the informant, “This is a very crucial part of the investigation."
Comer scrambled to explain.
“No, I said, I said I want to know," he responded.
"I want to know what this guy told the FBI. If this guy, the FBI had a record that said, this guy said they took a bribe, well, we've got $5 million deposited from [Ukrainian company] Burisma into Hunter Biden's account. We know he didn't pay taxes on it because that's what he was charged on. And we know Joe Biden fired the prosecutor who was investigating this company that paid his son $5 million.
"So obviously, we're going to interview everyone."
He added, “Everything was a crucial part of the investigation."
