Donald Trump's former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, reportedly bamboozled his boss into switching his vice presidential pick from embattled New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) to Indiana Gov. Mike Pence (R) by staging an airplane malfunction.
In July, The New York Times reported that Trump and Pence "impromptu dinner" after the GOP candidate's plane was grounded by "mechanical problems."

"And at some point during the evening, Mr. Trump asked Mr. Pence if he would say yes, were Mr. Trump to offer him the No. 2 slot," according to the Times.
But a Sunday report in the New York Post revealed that Manafort took the dramatic step of lying to Trump about mechanical problems with the plane after his boss tentatively selected Christie for the V.P. slot.
“Trump had wanted Christie but Bridgegate would have been the biggest national story,” Trump source told the Post. “He’d lose the advantage of not being corrupt.”
Manafort left the campaign in August after question arose about his business ties with Russia.
NBC News Justice Correspondent Pete Williams reported on Sunday that Donald Trump's baseless claim of a "rigged" election influenced FBI Director James Comey to break with the Justice Department's policy against taking actions that could influence elections.
Although longstanding Department of Justice guidelines have cautioned against disclosing investigative steps within 60 days of an election, Comey recently informed Congress that he had directed the FBI to investigate newly found emails that may or may not be relevant in the probe of Hillary Clinton's private email server.
Williams explained on Sunday that Comey, in part, broke with tradition -- just 11 days before the election -- because of Trump's bogus warnings about a "rigged" system.
"They believe that they did the right thing by telling Congress about this development," Williams said on NBC's Meet the Press. "And their logic goes something like this, that the fact that the discovery of these emails was going to leak, that if it leaked it would come out in all sorts of different ways and be interpreted in all sorts of different ways and that the best way to handle it was just to get out in front of it."
"And secondly," he continued, "they thought that if they waited until after election and then it was discovered that they had found these emails, that would play into this whole scenario about how the system is rigged."
Williams also pointed out that Comey and the FBI still did not know what was in the emails.
"They don't know whether they are significant to the question of the email investigation," he explained.

Republican North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory's voter ID law may have been struck down, but he suggested on Sunday that other suppression techniques were working because Democratic voters were "not coming out" to the polls.
Earlier this year, a federal court found that North Carolina Republicans intended to suppress minority voters by requiring a photo ID, banning election day registrations and other regressive restrictions.
McCrory told Fox News on Sunday that Republicans had been successful in suppressing the Democratic vote.
"We're already seeing the Clinton voters not coming out in numbers the Obama voters were coming out four years ago at this point in time," he explained to Fox News host Maria Bartiromo. "I think the turnout will be impacted by this [Hillary Clinton email scandal] because people are just disgusted with the whole thing."
"And I think there is Clinton fatigue," he added. "And, frankly, there was some concern about Mr. Trump too. It's kind of ironic. In the last three weeks, the media keeps going to me, 'Are you still going to support Trump due to the controversy from two weeks ago?' It's going to be interesting if the media turns around and ask my opponent [Roy Cooper], 'Are you still going to support Hillary Clinton?'"
"And are you supporting Trump?" Bartiromo wondered.
"I am," McCrory replied.

Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway lashed out at CNN's Jake Tapper on Sunday for asking questions about how Donald Trump has attracted supporters who were racists, misogynists, xenophobes and anti-Semites.
At a campaign rally in Phoenix last week, one of Donald Trump supporters was removed from the event after he began chanting "Jew-S-A" at members of the media.
On Sunday, Tapper asked Conway why Donald Trump had refused to say he did not want the votes of that type of supporter.
"There are a lot of anti-Semites and racists and misogynists who support the Trump candidacy," Tapper noted.
"Wow," Conway gasped.
"Would you call that man deplorable?" Tapper wondered.
"Yes, I would," Conway replied. "Wow, I have to push back on some of the adjectives you just used to describe -- I hope you've been to Trump rallies and I hope that you've seen the tens of thousands. I mean, he's had over half a million people easily, I think in excess of that. These are U.S.A.-loving Americans."
Tapper pointed out that he was not condemning all Trump supporters.
"But without question, people who are experts on hate groups say that there has been a comfort level that has been offered to people who are anti-Semitic that has been offered to people who are anti-Semitic and racists and on and on," the CNN host explained. "And these people are comfortable coming out in the open and supporting Mr. Trump."
"Mr. Trump has refused to condemn in a very serious way his racist and anti-Semitic fans," Tapper continued. "He just has. He says things like, "Oh, sure, I disavow, I disavow.' But he has never serious said, 'I don't want the support of those people, they are reprehensible, they have nothing to do with me.' He has never seriously done it."
Conway disagreed: "I think this exchange is frankly the best piece of evidence I have that we're actually going to win in nine days because the idea that we're going to shift away from the pattern of corruption the cloud of ethical stain that Hillary Clinton would bring to the Oval Office in such an important week."

The Florida Gulf Coast University Police Department said this week that there would be no criminal investigation after a racist threat was found in one of FGCU's classrooms.
WBBH reported that the words "kill n****rs" and a drawing of a person hanging from a tree by a noose were scrawled on a whiteboard in Seidler Hall earlier this month. Officials believe the vandalism occurred on Oct. 12, soon after it was found by Professor Sharon Isern.
In a statement released on Wednesday, President Wilson Bradshaw called the incident "deeply disturbing."
"While occurrences such as this are very rare at FGCU, we strongly condemn this hateful expression which is contrary to the civil and mutually respectful culture of our campus community," Bradshaw said.
The person who made the drawing is unknown and the University Police Department said that there was little it could do other than increasing patrols in the area.
“There is no active criminal investigation as no crime occurred,” Chief Steven Moore explained. “This was on a white board with the proper type of pens so easily erased, therefore, no vandalism. As there is no crime, there is no hate crime.”
That, however, is little consolation to FGCU students.
“The fact that it is in relation to the way I identify, yeah that’s harsh, that’s… kinda scary," a student named Cassie told WBBH.
“They’re talking about killing a certain race, so it’s not something that should be taken lightly in my opinion,” student Brielle Conner said.

Donald Trump adviser Rudy Giuliani said on Wednesday that he was able to be tough on black criminals because he had no "racial guilt," and he asserted that it was improper to ever call anyone -- especially in the Trump campaign -- a racist.
During an interview on MSNBC, host Stephanie Ruhle told the former New York Mayor that she had never seen "the hate and the racism" from presidential campaign supporters like she has seen from Trump's backers.
And after Giuliani insisted "there's no racism," Ruhle pointed to Steve Bannon, who quit Breitbart News to become CEO of the Trump campaign.
"You don't think Breitbart News, Steven Bannon, the architect of Donald Trump's campaign -- what do you believe Breitbart represents?" the MSNBC host asked.
"Racist? The last thing in this world that Donald Trump is is a racist," Giuliani scoffed. "The man likes white people, he likes black people, he likes Hispanic people, he plays golf with them."
"But can you say that Steven Bannon doesn't run Donald Trump's campaign?" Ruhle pressed. "He's the CEO of the campaign."
"Donald Trump runs Donald Trump's campaign!" Giuliani exclaimed.
"Then what's he doing even paying Steven Bannon?" Ruhle shot back.
"To say that Donald Trump is a racist is outrageous!" Giuliani replied indignantly. "To call anybody a racist is outrageous. I can't stand that."
"Hold on," Ruhle interrupted. "There are people that you can call racist."
Giuliani, however, pivoted: "It's Hillary Clinton who says to us, we all have implicit bias."
"Hillary, I got news for you, I don't," he added. "Maybe you do. I have no racial guilt. Not a single bit of it, which is why I'm willing to tell the truth about black crime and what has to be done about it."
"And there is no mayor in this history of this city that saved more black lives than me. Nobody even close."
Ruhle continued her line of questioning about Bannon, but the discussion quickly devolved as Giuliani accused MSNBC of being "left wing and totally anti-Trump and totally anti-Republican."
"You got some people on this station that are flying off the wall," he charged.

Officials at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County complained this week after one of Donald Trump's golf courses hit the charity with $20,000 in charges to hold a fundraiser that was expected to cost little or nothing.
The Palm Beach Post reported in July that the Trump International Golf Club is required to allow charities to use its facilities because the course is built on county land. Each year the charity is selected by a different county commissioner.
This year, County Commissioner Melissa McKinlay selected the Boys and Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County to receive the benefit. And Trump's course signed on to sponsor the fundraiser.
But McKinlay learned this week from Assistant County Administrator Todd Bonlarron that Trump's people were requiring the charity to pay $20,000 in golf and catering fees. In the past, fees had reportedly been capped at $5,000.
In an email this week, Mark Casale, vice president philanthropy for the Boys and Girls Clubs, told McKinlay and Assistant County Administrator Todd Bonlarron that Trump's course was effectively asking for half of the proceeds from the fundraiser.
“This ‘free’ event is costing us $20,000 between golf and catering fees,” Casale said. “What we had hoped for as far as a ‘net’ income for this event has been cut in half (if we are lucky).”
Bonlarron told Palm Beach Post that it had not "been an issue at all in the past" because the golf course had never charged more than $5,000.
According to Casale's email, Trump International Golf Club is asking for $6,000 to $7,000 in golf fees and $13,000 in catering fees. The catering estimate had been closer to $20,000 before the charity "removed many of the items on the menu," he said.
In an interview with the paper on Tuesday, Casale said that he was hopeful that "everything’s going to work out for the betterment of everybody."
“I just think there was a misunderstanding and we’re all working it out right now," he explained. "We’re still trying to work out those fees."
Commissioner McKinlay noted in an email to Palm Beach Post that the unexpected charges "placed me and the charity in a very bad position and I am quite upset by it."
“None of this was disclosed to me when given the choice to select a charity. I was under the impression the charity was able to host the event without any charges,” McKinlay wrote. “Explain to me how this is supposed to be a benefit to the county?”
"If I were the Boys & Girls Club, I would pull out. How are smaller charities supposed to be able to afford this?"
Matt Forney, a self-described alt-right radio host, suggested this week that there would be a "white baby boom" after the November election because "women are having sex dreams" about Donald Trump.
In a tweet on Monday, Matt Forney mocked Cosmopolitan writer Laura Beck, who said that allegations about Trump groping women were impacting her sex life.
"On one hand, the thought of being touched by my husband, a man, after spending day upon never-ending day listening to Donald Trump’s sexually assaultive language, is not a pleasant one," Beck wrote. "On the other, we are both so obsessed with the election that our combined anxiety is killing our sex drives."
Forney responded: "I fully endorse shitlibs not having sex due to Trump, it makes them less likely to breed."
And then in a follow-up tweet, he asserted that Trump's 2016 campaign was a turn-on, at least for white women.
"[I]n my experience though, the majority of white women are having sex dreams about Trump, expect a white baby boom after he takes office," he opined.
The backlash on Twitter was swift.
Jeff Roe, the former presidential campaign manager for Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), said that it was a "glorious day" after the news broke that Americans would be paying more for their health insurance.
On Monday, the Obama administration announced that premiums for health insurance purchased under the Affordable Care Act -- or Obamacare -- would to rise 22 percent on average. The Department of Health and Human Services also said that subsidy increases were expected to help offset the premium hikes.
Roe lamented to CNN that Cruz had not been able to capitalize on the news while he was running for president.
"It would be a very exciting day, I must admit," he smiled. "This is awful news for the Democrats. The centerpiece of the Obama presidency, a candidate running to be the third term of the Obama presidency, and you're just handed a gift. And everybody gets the [insurance premium] letters roughly the same day. So, it's like a direct mail piece in 300 million people's homes."
"It's a wonderful opportunity," Roe continued. "I would be pouncing up and down on this all day."
According to Roe, the Cruz campaign "always thought that this [election] should be a referendum on Obamacare because the Democrats have to stick with it."
"So it would be a wonderful day today," he insisted. "In fact, many people looked towards this day even during the Republican primary, thinking this will be in October, these are all going to come out, everybody's prices will go up, premiums will go up, co-pays will go up. So this would be a glorious day for the campaign."
"And I still actually think it will be for Trump because it's still part of the narrative that they're pushing."

Fox News host Bill Hemmer called it "good news" that more whites were casting votes in Ohio while "the black share of the vote is down."
On Tuesday, Hemmer found a silver lining for Republicans in the midst of national polls showing Donald Trump significantly behind Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.
"I'm looking at early voting," Hemmer told RNC Communications Director Sean Spicer. "You have good news in Ohio, white share of the vote is up 3 points from four years ago, black share of the vote is down 7."
For his part, Spicer ignored the racial demographics and focused on the GOP's lead in absentee ballots, which usually show an advantage for Republicans.
"Our people are coming out," Spicer said.

CNN has reportedly blown past its earning forecasts by $100 million thanks to the network's focus on Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, a report said on Monday.
Sources told NPR media correspondent David Folkenflik that CNN's "Trump fascination" was responsible for a revenue windfall.
As of May, Trump had reportedly received the equivalent of $3 billion in free advertisements due to wall-to-wall media coverage.
CNN also maximized its election cash machine by hosting countless hours of Trump surrogates, often at the expense of real reporting.
Washington Post media columnist Margaret Sullivan detail earlier this month how CNN played a crucial role in the "improbable rise of Donald Trump."
CNN president Jeff Zucker "gave Trump astonishing amounts of free exposure in the Republican presidential primary on the cable network, continually blasting out his speeches and rallies — often unfiltered and without critical fact-checking," Sullivan wrote.
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump vented at an adult film star on Monday who has accused him of groping her.
Over the weekend, actress Jessica Drake said that Trump kissed her and two of her friends without permission. She also claimed that he later offered her $10,000 for sex.
In a Monday interview on New Hampshire radio station WGIR, Trump lashed out at Drake.
"These are stories that are made up, it's total fiction," Trump told radio host Jake Heath. "You'll find out that in the years to come, these women that stood up, it's all fiction. They were made up. I don't know these women."
"It's not my thing to do what they say. I don't do that," he continued. "I don't grab them -- as they say -- on the arm. One said, 'He grabbed me on the arm.' And she's a porn star! This one that came out recently, 'He grabbed me and he grabbed me on the arm.'"
Trump added sarcastically: "Oh, I'm sure she's never been grabbed before."
"This are lies," he insisted. "These are fabricated stories, have no truth to them whatsoever. And it will come out in the future. You watch."
