Former President Donald Trump revealed the details of what he called a very good phone call with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Taking to his own social media app, Trump wrote that Zelensky congratulated him on receiving the GOP nomination for president and for a "very successful Republican National Convention."
Zelensky also "condemned the heinous assassination attempt last Saturday" and called for Americans to come together in the "spirit of Unity," according to Trump.
"I appreciate President Zelenskyy for reaching out because I, as your next President of the United States, will bring peace to the world and end the war that has cost so many lives and devastated countless innocent families. Both sides will be able to come together and negotiate a deal that ends the violence and paves a path forward to prosperity," wrote Trump.

The call comes after Republicans in February gaveled the House of Representatives out for a two-week recess without holding a vote on a foreign aid package that passed the Senate. At the time, Zelensky had a pointed message for American lawmakers who left for vacation for the remainder of the month.
"Please remember everyone that dictators do not go on vacation," Zelensky said at the time, according to New York Times reporter Peter Baker.
Earlier this month, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said the U.S. would send the country $2.3 billion in additional security assistance, including anti-tank weapons, interceptors and air defense munitions, according to The Associated Press.
That announcement came as Kyiv sought help battling Russian forces in the Donetsk region.
“Make no mistake, Ukraine is not alone, and the United States will never waver in our support,” Austin said at the time. “Alongside some 50 allies and partners, we’ll continue to provide critical capabilities that Ukraine needs to push back Russian aggression today and to deter Russian aggression tomorrow.”
