'Crazy that people defend him': Former GOP congressman scolds party's reaction to Trump indictment
Rep. Will Hurd (R-TX)

Former Rep. Will Hurd (R-TX) expressed disbelief on Thursday that so many of his one-time colleagues were rushing to the defense of former President Donald Trump.

Appearing on CNN, Hurd said that Trump's handling of top-secret government documents was completely unacceptable, though he said that the former president could have still avoided criminal prosecution had he complied with a subpoena demanding all the documents' return.

"Donald Trump would rather have a fight than follow the law," he said. "To me, this is crazy that so many people are defending him for doing this and we wouldn't be in this position if he had returned [the documents] back."

Hurd noted that former Vice President Mike Pence avoided any criminal charges for possessing classified documents because he immediately alerted the government upon finding them and willingly gave back everything that he had.

Hurd then went on to document the large amount of evidence that Trump showed criminal intent with his efforts to block the government from retrieving the documents it had requested.

"It is very clear that Donald Trump... knew he had information that was so sensitive that the classification is classified!" he said. There are several of those documents... where it said in the classification line that they are marked out, they're redacted, because the classification is classified... we wouldn't be in this position if he just gave the documents back."
