Florida Governor and 2024 GOP presidential candidate Ron DeSantis' speech this Friday at a Philadelphia summit for Moms for Liberty, a conservative group known for fighting with school boards over racial and gender-related materials in schools, is the subject of mockery on Twitter, with some saying he's trying to emulate Winston Churchill's famous wartime speech against the Nazis.
“As president, I will fight the woke in the corporations, I will fight the woke in the schools, I will fight the woke in the halls of Congress. We will never, ever surrender to the woke mob,” DeSantis said at the Moms for Liberty summit in Philadelphia.
Some think the portion of the speech mimicked Churchill's famous speech as he vowed to continue to fight Nazis during World War II: "We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender."
One person on Twitter mockingly wrote: "We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills;- Winston Churchill. 'I will fight the Woke'- Wannabe Fascist Ron DeSantis."
"I really wish we knew who wrote the Desantis/Churchill fighting the woke on the beaches speech. You know they really thought they were cooking with that one," wrote another.
A Twitter user called Debbie does reproductve rights said: "Ron DeSantis, the man who is banning books in Florida schools that teach about the Holocaust and slavery said “Jan. 6 is in the past, time to move on.” Someone should tell this little fascist that "Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it." Winston Churchill."
"Police warn against playing the "woke" drinking game. May cause permanent liver damage," wrote one Twitter user.
"At this point, don’t we think Ron DeSantis saying 'woke' is a nervous tick? It reminds me of that 2008 Joe Biden quote when he said that every sentence Rudy Giuliani uttered included a noun, a verb, and 9/11," wrote another person.
As many in the pile-on pointed out, Moms for Liberty was recently designated as an anti-government "extremist" organization by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
