Canada's 'Freedom Convoy': Is this Jan. 6 for the Great White North?

If you choose to believe Fox News and right-wing social media, this weekend a 40-mile long "Freedom Convoy" of 50,000 Canadian truckers, plus millions of their supporters, will converge in Ottawa — our northern neighbor's capital — for a mass protest that will gridlock the city until all of the country's vaccine mandates are repealed.

The anti-vaccination convoy movement has raised some $7 million, and earned the support of Canadian conservative Parliament leader Erin O'Toole, who says he plans to meet with the truckers, as well as prominent American conservatives or libertarians from Donald Trump Jr. and Tucker Carlson to Elon Musk. Videos of the convoy have proliferated online, most depicting lines of tractor-trailers driving across Canada, variously set to dramatic film scores or Twisted Sister, and cheered on by throngs of spectators waving the Maple Leaf flag on highway shoulders and overpasses. Other images and videos have popped up too, showcasing the efforts of convoy supporters, including a sort of women's auxiliary unit singing "O Canada" while assembling sandwiches for the truckers.

How we discovered a rare giant millipede fossil on a beach – and why it matters

Ever stumbled upon a huge fossil on your holiday? That’s what happened to me and two friends in January 2018, on a beach in Howick in the north of England, while on a geological road-trip across England and Wales. It was pure fluke, but it turned out that we had discovered the 326 million-year-old remains of a millipede-like animal of huge proportions.

Our research suggests that the living creature would have been around 50cm in width and 2.5 metres in length – about as long as an alligator – so we could safely conclude that we had found a fossil of an Arthropleura, the largest invertebrate to have ever lived.

Revisiting 'The Lost Boys of Ukraine': How the war abroad attracted American white supremacists

With Russian troops massing at the Ukrainian border and international concern mounting about the potential for an invasion, concern has revived among analysts that the conflict could galvanize violent extremists in the United States.

Since 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea and Russian-backed separatists took control of two self-declared republics in the Donbas, Ukraine has captured the imagination of far-right extremists in the United States, Australia and Western Europe, some of whom have volunteered to fight with the ultranationalist Right Sector paramilitary or networked with Azov Battalion.

Russia-Ukraine standoff is 'becoming a trial of strength' as it splits the GOP: conservative strategist

Vladimir Putin's potential invasion of Ukraine is splitting the conservative movement, former George W. Bush strategist David Frum explained on Friday.

"Night after night, the host of the top-rated show on Fox News repeats Vladimir Putin’s talking points justifying aggression against Ukraine and opposing U.S. aid to that threatened sovereign country. Tucker Carlson’s influence is felt across right-wing social media, where it is amplified by figures such as Steve Bannon, Mike Cernovich, Glenn Greenwald, and Mollie Hemingway," he wrote in The Atlantic. "Meanwhile, day after day, Republican officeholders in the House and the Senate urge more support for Ukraine."
